The most common operating system prior to Windows is DOS (Disk Operating System). As a single command-based process operating system it executes non-graphical interface operations. MS-DOS is the most popular one, let's make it known now.

The DOS family includes MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS, PTS-DOS, ROM-DOS, Free-DOS, JM-OS, etc. of which the most popular is MS-DOS developed by Microsoft. While sometimes referred to as "DOS," none of these systems are simply called "DOS" (only one unrelated IBM mainframe operating system called after it in the 1960s).
Microsoft announced after releasing the Windows 95, that MS-DOS would no longer release the latest version separately. Although Free-DOS, etc., and other DOS compatible MS-DOS are still evolving.
DOS is a standard user, single mission, non-graphical operating system with a command line. It is simple, lightweight and very powerful as an operating system, although it is now overtaken by a newer, more user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) Windows operating system.
An OS is the software that controls the hardware and peripheral devices of a computer, and allows certain programs to operate. Early computers had no disk drives, but they were hard-wired to perform complex computations. Earlier, machines used punch cards and earlier magnetic tapes to store instructions loaded into the computer's memory. Computer memory space was small, and it was considered cutting-edge technology when the instructions to run a computer were transferred to a disk drive, such as a floppy disk or internal hard drive. Every modern operating system today can be used as a disk operating system.
The disk operating system is often used to identify many operating systems with somewhat similar command line disks. PC-DOS (Personal Computer Disk Operating System) was the first commonly distributed disk operating system that was used in personal computers running on 16-bit Intel 8086 processors. Microsoft Corporation developed it for IBM which also created its own almost identical version called MS-DOS. (DOS/360 was an IBM mainframe operating system that first appeared in 1966, but is not related to the 8086 DOS of the 1980s.
Those early operating systems weren't multitasking, because they could only run one program at a time. The command line interface allowed the user to recall commands to run programs or perform other operating system functions, making it difficult for novices to use the command line interface. For instance, typing the "cd \directory name" command changed the current working directory into the named directory and typing the "dir" command listed the files in the current directory.
When Microsoft first implemented Windows as a graphical user interface (GUI) for MS-, early users had to type "WIN" to start the Windows system at the DOS prompting. Windows has developed from a GUI program running under DOS to a full operating system that takes over as the default operating system,But it wasn't until Windows XP that user versions of Windows stopped depending on win.com's DOS software to bootstrap the kernel.
MS-DOS's most recent retail version was MS-DOS 6.22. MS-DOS was still bundled as part of Windows following this release but no longer needed a separate license. It can still run under Windows using the system Command Prompt. There is an open source version of DOS, called FreeDOS, based on and MS-DOS compatible.
Note: The term DoS with a lowercase O is short for Denial of Service, a means of targeting a networked device by sending it an abnormally large number of requests to exhaust its resources so that legitimate users are unable to access it.
Today, Windows operating systems tend to support DOS or in other words-for special purposes, a DOS-like user interface. It's pretty secret now but still there.
How is it that DOS does? We need a computer commander to command, for example, just like we humanly rely on the brain to order stuff like work and research. The System Commander is DOS. You are the commander-in-chief of course: you order the DOS to enable the DOS to control the computer.
So, how can you use DOS? The basic concept is to access the DOS command prompt window and the commands.
If you are using a computer with DOS as the operating system, when you turn on your machine, a command prompt will automatically appear. If you are using a Windows device, a command prompt would need to be triggered manually. It can be reached by simultaneously typing Win and R keys. Then type in the pop-out box cmd(short for the command), and then you will be in DOS,Also referred to as Prompt Command.
MS-DOS, unlike Windows, uses MS-DOS navigation commands. For example, if you want to view all the files in a Windows folder, double-click the folder in Windows Explorer to open it. In MS-DOS, the cd command will be used to navigate to the folder and then use the dir command to list the files in the folder.
However though after 1997 MS-DOS stopped releasing new updates, the DOS operating system itself remains an integral part of today's computing environment. Many companies and individual programmers tend to rely on DOS to manage many embedded applications. DOS is still alive because it is a very lightweight and powerful operating system with very little maintenance.
Theoretically, the MS-DOS is no longer popular and Microsoft has made it known that this operating system will not be upgraded. Yet MS-remains in use worldwide and is responsible for many embedded applications. MS-can no longer be a very relevant operating system but it still has importance and needs the attention of the programmer.

What is DOS
DOS (Disk Operating System) is something of a personal computer operating system. The standard operating system was DOS, before Windows emerged. DOS held a key role in the IBM PC-compatible computer industry from 1981 until 1995.The DOS family includes MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS, PTS-DOS, ROM-DOS, Free-DOS, JM-OS, etc. of which the most popular is MS-DOS developed by Microsoft. While sometimes referred to as "DOS," none of these systems are simply called "DOS" (only one unrelated IBM mainframe operating system called after it in the 1960s).

How to Use DOS?
These were essentially based on DOS with a graphical gui when Windows 95/Windows 98 appeared. And the DOS is turned into an embedded subsystem in the Windows 2000/Windows XP series. DOS is similar to a computer console on their desktop which can input commands. Often issues which the desktop system can not handle can be moved to the DOS window.Today, Windows operating systems tend to support DOS or in other words-for special purposes, a DOS-like user interface. It's pretty secret now but still there.

Know About MS-DOS
As stated earlier, MS-DOS is one of Microsoft's DOS family released which is the most popular DOS.
